The Schengen Agreement was entered into in 1985 by Germany, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands to for the gradual abolition of border checks. With the of Amsterdam Treaty (1997), the Schengen system was incorporated into the European Union law.
Today, there are no customs and passport checks on the borders of these EU member states.
